6 Easy Things You Can Do To Create Healthy Living Habits

 In Healthy Habits

Healthy living takes a lot of work, right?  Well, not always.  Sometimes small actions can add up over time and go a long way in creating a healthy lifestyle.  Check out these 6 easy things you can do each day to improve your health.

1. Park Far Away

Always looking for the closest parking spot wherever you go?  Next time try parking in the back of the lot.  This will force you to walk a little bit more than you normally would and won’t really add that much time to your trip.  Don’t think it’s worth it?  Parking further away can help you burn an extra 10 calories every time you go to and from the car.  Do that five times a day and it adds up to more than 18,000 calories per year!

2. Take the Stairs

Skip the wait for the elevator and head straight to the stairs.  This little bit of extra physical activity is great for your heart and can help you increase muscle strength and power.  It can also help shrink your waistline.  A 160-pound person can burn about nine calories per minute walking up the stairs.

3. Get a Standing Desk

The average worker spends nearly 6 hours each day sitting at a desk.  It’s time to ditch the chair and get on your feet!  Try a standing desk instead.  One study showed that on average, a person standing burned about 50 more calories per hour than someone sitting.  Standing while working can also do wonders for your posture and endurance.

4. Use Your Lunch Break

Instead of sitting at your desk or in the break room for lunch try going outside and taking a walk.  Go out for 10 minutes then turn back around.  That’s an extra 20 minutes of exercise each day, which can really add up over the course of a year.

5. Get a Pedometer

A pedometer is a small device that counts the number of steps you take.  It is recommended that you walk 10,000 steps each day.  If the only walking you’re doing all day is going back and forth from your car you may be surprised to see how few steps you take.  A pedometer can be a great motivator to get you moving and get your step count up.

6. Get Rid of the Snacks

Do you keep candy, cookies, or other sugary snacks in your office?  If so, get rid of them!  If they’re not there, you won’t eat them.  Cutting out just one cookie a day can save you up to 21,170 calories a year!

Small changes can add up over time and go a long way in creating healthy living habits.  Want to be proactive about your health?  Contact us today to see how we can create a health plan just for you.
